Sustain Africa’s 2023 programme in Ghana was launched on May 19th with an event attended by the Honorable Dr. Brian Acheampong, Minister of Food and Agriculture, Ghana.
Other attendees included various Members of the Ghanaian Parliament, Directors of Ghana’s Regional Departments of Agriculture, Ben Valk, Executive Director of Sustain Africa, Fred Akowuah, Country Director of Export Trading Group (ETG) and Nana-Aisha Mohammed, Sustain Africa Regional Manager for West Africa.
The new programme, which runs until the end of March 2023, will supply 15,000 metric tonnes of discounted fertilizer, provided by ETG, to 80,000 Maize and soy farmers and 20,000 rice farmers. These farmers can now acquire a 50-kilogram bag of ammonium sulphate fertilizer at a discounted rate of GH¢250, significantly less than the standard market price of GH¢300. Additionally, NPK 23-10 fertilizer, crucial for the nourishment of a wide range of crops, is available at a reduced price of GH¢300, a substantial discount from the usual market price of GH¢450.
ETG will also provide market linkages for farmers produce as well as offtaking a target of 25,000MT of rice, 30, 000MTof maize and 5,000 MT of soybean.
Finally, 100 Community Based Advisors (CBAs) will be trained to facilitate the sale of the discounted fertilizer to farmers. Half of these will be youth trainees.
Sustain Africa partners ETG and AFAP – the implementing partner – also hosted a farmer field day to train farmers on the application of the NPK fertilizer, for example the importance of precise line spacing.
