How Sustain Africa Works

Sustain Africa determines eligible countries based on an assessment of food insecurity. Factors include but are not limited to fertilizer supply gap, existence and availability of fertilizer subsidies, feasibility of interventions given current macroeconomic, political and security situation.

Sustain Africa mobilizes and coordinates partners to provide services to improve access to, and sustainable use of, the discounted / donated fertilizer. These services include the provision of seeds and biological products for better uptake. Where possible, Sustain Africa also works to strengthen market linkages and access to affordable finance for agrodealers and farmers.

Where possible, Sustain Africa combines discounted fertilizer with concessional funding to further improve the affordability of plant nutrients for farmers.

Implementing partners and input suppliers identify distributors and agrodealers for delivery of inputs, and extension services to farmers.

Implementors apply and monitor a tracking system.

Sustain Africa collects data from partners for impact measurement as well as to support a broader learning agenda on how to deal effectively with price spikes that pose serious risk to food security.

The Sustain Africa Project Management Office (PMO) coordinates the supply of donated or discounted fertilizer including organising transport and blending at national facilities where required / possible.

The PMO works with input suppliers and governments to ensure delivery while minimising unintended market distortions.

Where we Work

Sustain Africa is currently operational in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mozambique, Malawi, Madagascar, Uganda and Zambia with a target of just over 2 million farmers reached. In addition, Sustain Africa is carrying out advisory assignments in Kenya and Nigeria and is supporting a liming scoping project in Tanzania.
Country priority is determined based on: Risk of food insecurity; fertilizer supply gap and; feasibility of the interventions (including scope of Sustain Africa partners, availability of implementing partners, political and security risks and macro-economic stability, scope and effectiveness of existing government subsidy and emergency programmes). We carefully assess the market to ensure Sustain Africa intervention would not cause market distortion.
