Sustain Africa Championing AFSH-AP Implementation and Domestication

Sustain Africa recently led key partners and stakeholders including Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock (MASAE), and the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) in Dakar, Senegal, for a pivotal workshop dedicated to advancing the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Action Plan (AFSH-AP) domestication in Senegal. This work is made possible through a generous funding from Foreign, Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO).

The workshop brought together government policymakers, development partners, private sector actors, and farmer organizations to align efforts toward healthier soils and more resilient food systems across the continent. The Nairobi Declaration of May 2024 gave birth to AFSH-AP. Sustain Africa is leading its implementation as the Secretariat of the Coalition for Fertilizer Private Sector & Business Engagement (C4FBIZ), as mandated by the African Union and AUDA-NEPAD to lead the private sector engagement pillar of the AFSH-AP (2024–2034).

National and Regional Collaboration

Building from hosting Africa Food Systems Forum in September 2025, Senegal has positioned itself as a leader, actively pursuing the domestication and implementation of AFSH-AP. The discussions in Dakar laid a strong foundation for national and regional collaboration to enhance soil fertility and improve food security in Senegal, a critical milestone in Africa’s broader agricultural transformation agenda.

On the sidelines of the workshop, Sustain Africa’s Executive Director, Sheila Keino, joined representatives from AGRA, MASAE), and (IFDC) for a joint press conference. The session emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation in ensuring the sustainable implementation of the AFSH-AP.

“The initiative is anchored on two interlinked priorities: first, strengthening Senegal’s institutional readiness to align national policies and programs with the AFSH-AP; and second, amplifying and applying insights from the Sustain Africa Learning Agenda to inform decision-making, financing, and stakeholder engagement,” said Sheila Keino.

Building Africa’s Future on Healthy Soils and Sustainable Agriculture

As the initiative moves forward, Sustain Africa working with AGRA and other partners is focused on turning commitments into tangible, on-the-ground results. The next engagement will take place in Malawi in November, where the team will continue collaborating with national stakeholders to translate the AFSH-AP into measurable impact for farmers and communities.

Together, these efforts mark an important step toward realizing Africa’s vision of productive, sustainable, and inclusive agriculture — one rooted in healthy soils and thriving food systems for all.
